Daughters of the Nile is a benevolent international fraternal organization for women who are wives, daughters, mothers, widows, sisters, granddaughters or nieces of Shriners. Originating in Seattle, Washington, the group was founded in 1913 by 22 women with strength of purpose and vision. Since that time, membership has flourished and today the organization includes 147 Temples throughout the United States and Canada, with more than 58,000 members. The Daughters of the Nile are committed to supporting the important work of the 22 Shriners Hospital for Children throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Members of Daughters of the Nile are proud of their long association with the Shrine of North America and their continuing support of the Shrine's official philanthropy, Shriners Hospitals for Children. Each year, through the Supreme Temple Convalescent Endowment Fund and Convalescent Relief Fund, the Daughters of the Nile contribute more than a million and a half dollars to Shriners Hospitals to be used for prosthetic limbs, braces, shoes and other medical supplies for children. In 1997 alone, Shriners Hospital provided specialized medical care to more than 160,000 children across North America - without charge to the children and their families.
In addition, many Temples sew clothing and quilts and provide toys, games, books and other items for the children. The value of these donations totals another $250,000 each year. Additionally, these ladies give generously of their time to the hospitals, providing more than 75,000 volunteer hours each year at the 22 Shriners Hospitals.
Gold Donor Recognition Plaques are proudly displayed in all 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children recognizing Daughters of the Nile for their generous support. Each plaque represents $1 million or more in donations. The Daughters of the Nile are proud of this record of generosity, and are dedicated to their philosophy of "working together for the children."
