MIDIAN SHRINE

PURPOSE OF THE MIDIAN SHRINE

WHAT WE DO
Midian Shrine Center is an organization of Shrine Masons who believe in the Fatherhood of God, Brotherhood of Man, and Charity to those in need. The Center is affiliated with Imperial Council, Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of Mystic Shrine (AAONMS) for North America and supports the Shriners Hospitals for Children.

Midian Shrine Center was founded in 1909. The derivation of the word "Midian" is a biblical name for a part of northwest Arabia. It also alludes to the meaning of middle, which describes location of the organization in the approximate middle of the United States.

Midian consists of 14 Shrine Clubs "mini centers" which are located in communities outside of Wichita. They provide members with a meeting place, as well as an opportunity to remain active in those programs and services of Midian Shrine Center and Shrine of North America.

The organization also offers 43 Units, or special interest groups for members. The units give members a chance to pursue common interests, such as clowning, horseback riding, music, sports like bowling, parades, motorized cars, go-carts and cycles, and many other interests.

Two special units called the Flying Fezzes and Hospital Van Unit also help Midian transport children to physician-ordered orthopedic services offered by the 22 Shriners Hospitals for Children.

For over 80 years, Shriners Hospitals for children have provided some of the best medical care in the world to more than 700,000 children with orthopaedic problems, severe burns and spinal cord injuries. Founded in 1922, and today supported by the members of the international Shrine fraternity, the network of pediatric specialty hospitals is located in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The medical care for children up to 18 years of age is absolutely free of charge, regardless of race, religion or relationship to a Shriner.

By 2007 annual figures, Midian members served an estimated 629 Kansas children through the orthopedic hospital in St. Louis, Missouri, Shriners Hospital of Chicago, IL or Burns Institute in Galveston, Texas. These Shrine Masons support the Hospital Van Unit, maintained passenger vans and underwrote a charitable program which included child transport to a Shriners facility, clinical and/or hospital visits with medical or health-care professionals, food and lodging at a estimated cost of $139,305 or an average cost per trip of $218.32.

Shrine Masons across North America, who represents a fraternity of 485,000 members, served an active annual patient roster in 2002 through all hospitals of approximately 188,563 patients and approved 34,767 new treatment applications.

"Our hospitals never charge for medical services or treatment at a Shriners Hospital for Children or Burn Institute (from September 16, 1922 through today)," says Living Past Potentate Jeffrey L. Sowder, Past Grand Master, "nor will they accept payment from a patient, patient family member, guardian, insurance company or governmental agency."
